How to Choose the Right shadcn Admin Dashboard Template
Updated 2026-10-27
Most shadcn admin dashboards look alike in screenshots: a collapsible sidebar, a row of KPI cards, a chart and a table. The differences that matter show up after you clone the repo and try to connect real data. This guide covers what to check, with examples from the admin category on this site.
Start with the kind of product you are building
Admin templates fall into three groups, and picking the wrong group costs more time than picking the wrong template.
- Full dashboard templates ship a working app shell, pages, routing and mock data. Examples: Satnaing Shadcn Admin, Studio Admin, Kiranism Shadcn Dashboard Starter.
- Admin frameworks give you CRUD building blocks that connect to an API. Shadcn Admin Kit from marmelab is in this group: list, show, edit and create pages, data binding and support for REST or GraphQL backends.
- Dashboard component registries give you cards, charts and tables to install into your own app with the shadcn CLI. dashboardcn and Shadcn Dashboard work this way.
If you already have an app and need a reporting screen, a registry is usually enough. If you are starting an internal tool from nothing, a full template or an admin framework saves more time.
Data tables
The data table is where most admin work happens, and it is the hardest piece to retrofit. Check:
- Which table library. Most shadcn dashboards use TanStack Table, as the shadcn data table docs do. Studio Admin, Kiranism's starter and the dashboardcn data table card all list it.
- Server-side support. A demo that sorts and filters 50 rows in memory tells you nothing about 50,000 rows from an API. Look for pagination, sorting and filter state that can be passed to a fetch call, ideally synced to the URL.
- Bulk actions, column visibility and export. Shadcn Admin Kit lists sorting, filtering, exporting, bulk actions and pagination.
- Where the mock data lives. Templates that keep fake data behind a typed data layer are easier to swap out. The premium Shadcn Admin Dashboard from Shadcnblocks describes a typed JSON data layer with Zod schemas and Faker.
Authentication
Auth is often the reason a template does or does not fit. There are three levels:
- Screens only. Login, register and reset password pages with no backend. Fine if you are bringing your own provider.
- One provider wired in. Kiranism's starter lists NextAuth. Tailwind Admin lists Supabase Auth, NextAuth and Firebase Auth options.
- Several providers or access control. Shadcn Dashboard lists screens for Supabase Auth, Clerk and NextAuth, and Studio Admin lists role-based access control driven by config.
If the template uses a different auth provider from the one you plan to use, budget time to remove it cleanly. Middleware, session helpers and protected route logic tend to spread across the codebase.
Charts
shadcn's own chart components are built on Recharts, and most admin templates follow that choice. Shadcn Fintech, dashboardcn and Shadcn Dashboard all list Recharts. Check that charts use the chart-1 through chart-5 CSS variables so they follow your theme, and that empty, loading and error states exist, not only the happy path.
For more chart options, see the charts category.
Routing and framework: Next.js vs Vite
This decision affects deployment and data fetching more than UI.
| Next.js template | Vite template | |
|---|---|---|
| Rendering | Server components, SSR or static | Client-side single-page app |
| Routing | File-based App Router | Library such as React Router or TanStack Router |
| Hosting | Node or a platform like Vercel | Any static host |
| Auth patterns | Middleware and server sessions | Token handling in the client |
| Good fit | Customer-facing apps, SEO needs, full-stack teams | Internal tools behind a login, apps with a separate API |
Shadcn Admin by satnaing is built with Vite and, according to its current package.json, TanStack Router. Shadcn Admin Kit uses React Router. Studio Admin, Kiranism's starter and Shadcn Fintech Dashboard are Next.js projects. Shadcn Dashboard offers Next.js, React and TanStack Start versions, and Tailwind Admin publishes free versions for React, Next.js, Vue.js, Angular and TanStack Start.
An admin panel behind a login rarely needs server rendering for SEO. If your API already exists, a Vite build is simpler to host and reason about.
Free vs premium admin templates
Most of the admin category is open source. Two listings are premium, both listed at $129: the Shadcnblocks Shadcn Admin Dashboard and the Shadcn Admin Dashboard Kit, which bundles a 145+ page admin template with 19 specialized apps.
Some products sit in between. Shadcn UI Kit and Tailwind Admin both have a free version with a paid Pro tier; Tailwind Admin's free download includes one dashboard, three page templates and two auth pages, while Pro adds more dashboards, pages and Figma files.
What premium usually adds:
- More pages and app screens, such as kanban, calendar, chat, invoices and email
- A stated update schedule; Shadcnblocks describes monthly updates for its admin kit
- Design files in some cases
- A commercial license with defined terms
What open source usually offers instead: full visibility into the code before you commit, MIT or similar licensing, and community issues you can read to judge quality. See free vs premium shadcn templates for a longer breakdown.

A short evaluation checklist
- Run the demo and open the table page on a narrow screen.
- Read the data layer: how hard is it to replace mock data with your API?
- Check the auth provider and remove it in a branch to see how far it spreads.
- Look at the last commit date and open issues for open-source options.
- Confirm the shadcn base and Tailwind version, so registry components you add later match.
FAQ
Should I use an admin template or build from shadcn blocks?
Use a template when you need routing, layout and auth decided for you. Use blocks or a registry when you have an existing app and only need dashboard screens.
Can I use a Next.js admin template as a static site?
Some support static export, but features like middleware-based auth and server actions need a server. Check the template's docs before choosing static hosting.
Do admin templates include a backend?
Rarely. Most ship mock data and expect you to connect your own API. Admin frameworks like Shadcn Admin Kit are designed around connecting to an existing backend.
How do I keep a template up to date?
Once you clone it, the code is yours. Watch the upstream repo or changelog and port changes you need by hand, the same way you would with shadcn components.
