Overview
Taxonomy is an open-source app by shadcn, the creator of shadcn/ui, built as an experiment to see how a full modern application would work with the Next.js 13 App Router and server components. It combines authentication, Stripe subscriptions, API routes, and MDX-powered docs and blog pages in one codebase.
The project is now officially archived. Its README notes that the code was written while the App Router was in public preview, no longer reflects current best practices, may use deprecated APIs, and is not recommended for production. It remains a useful reference for how an early App Router app was structured, with UI components built on Radix UI and styled with Tailwind CSS.
Features
- App Router: The
/appdirectory with routing, layouts, nested layouts and layout groups - Server and client components: Data fetching, caching and mutation, loading UI, route handlers and metadata files
- Authentication: NextAuth.js, with API routes and middleware
- Database: Prisma ORM on PlanetScale
- Subscriptions: Stripe billing
- Docs and blog: MDX content through Contentlayer, with OG images generated by
@vercel/og - UI: Radix UI components, Tailwind CSS styling, responsive layouts and dark mode
- Validation: Zod schemas, written in TypeScript
