Overview
Stack began as Stack Auth, an open-source alternative to Auth0 and Clerk. The project has since been renamed Hexclave: the stack-auth/stack GitHub repository now redirects to hexclave/hexclave, and stack-auth.com serves the Hexclave site. It describes itself as a user infrastructure platform that handles authentication, teams, payments, emails and analytics while the developer picks the frontend, backend and database.
Hexclave ships as a catalog of apps built on one shared user model, switched on as a product needs them. It offers SDKs for Next.js, React and plain JavaScript, can run in the hosted cloud or be self-hosted, and is licensed under MIT and AGPLv3.
Features
- Authentication: Passkeys, OAuth and CLI auth, with sign-in methods toggled from the dashboard without code changes.
- Teams: Workspaces, email invites, a workspace switcher that remembers the selection, and roles that gate access.
- RBAC: Nested roles and a single permission check that works the same on the server and the client.
- API keys: Keys for users and teams that are shown in full only once, with leaked keys revoked automatically.
- Payments: Subscriptions, one-time charges and usage metering with credits, billed to a person or a whole team.
- Emails: Transactional and marketing sends from one API, an AI template editor, and open and click tracking.
- Analytics and webhooks: Live active-user counts and session replays, plus signed webhooks with retries and backoff.
