Overview
turn is an open-source, shadcn-compatible set of minimal, accessible UI components for AI applications: chat, agents and tool use. It is streaming-first, built on Base UI and Tailwind CSS, and installed with the shadcn CLI so every component becomes a self-contained file in the project.
The registry has 21 components, three hooks and a theme. Components take plain props with no provider, so they can be wired to the Vercel AI SDK, LangChain or raw server-sent events. Each is tested with axe and by keyboard in every state, text meets 4.5:1 contrast, screen reader live regions wait for a reply to finish, and movement stops under reduced motion.
Features
- Streaming markdown: Markdown is split into memoized blocks so only the live block re-renders, with code highlighted once a block settles.
- Reasoning and tool calls: Collapsible thinking, live tool status and numbered citations with previews.
- Plans and traces: Show agent steps as they run and how long each span took.
- Human in the loop: Approval prompts, an artifact pane with preview and code tabs, and thumbs feedback with a follow-up.
- Prompt composer: File attachments, slash commands and a model picker in one input.
- Chat utilities: Suggestions, scroll to bottom, error notice, copy button and an auto-scroll hook.
Tech stack
- React, Base UI, Tailwind CSS
- Shiki, react-markdown, remark-gfm
